New IRI Software Structures Unstructured Data

Much of the growth in big data comes from unstructured sources. Documents in MS Office, .pdf , .rtf, and text format, as well as email and XML repositories, may have valuable and sensitive data that needs to be extracted, transformed, protected, redirected, and/or analyzed.

IRI is helping to reach and leverage that data with an affordable, user-friendly graphical tool in the IRI Workbench IDE, built on Eclipse™. The Data Restructuring Wizard in the Unstructured Data Edition of IRI NextForm searches multiple sources for data patterns and associations, and puts the discovered values into columns in a flat result file that any IRI product can use. The wizard also creates a Data Definition File (.ddf) for the result file; the .ddf is a metadata repository that all IRI tools and your teams can share.

Now Serving Teradata!
IRI Workbench users can now access data in Teradata tables, auto-create and use the metadata for those sources in IRI software applications, and bulk-load Teradata targets with both operational results and test data. Read more about the new connection here. Learn how IRI RowGen creates realistic test data for Teradata (from Teradata DDL information, not production data) here

Native Support for UTF-8 Data
UTF-8 is part of a unified encoding (Unicode) standard designed to represent every international character used in digital files and communications. This article introduces SortCL program support in IRI CoSort for mapping UTF-8 data to different output formats, while sorting in encoding order. Email your needs for UTF-8 data processing to support@iri.com.

Tech Tip: Creating Multi-Byte Test Data
IRI RowGen can populate test tables, flat files, and custom reports through random data generation, or random selection from data in set files. See how RowGen creates pseudonymous insertions in a Korean name column here

Can You Nullify a Data Breach?
Data breach events are now a regular occurrence. Adobe last October, the Korea Credit Bureau in February, and Ebay in May, all suffered from compromised data at rest. In our Breached But Still Protected article, we take aim at the problem and suggest that all need not be lost when thieves strike. In fact, IRI FieldShield is designed to nullify the effect of a data breach because it applies differential protections to specific columns and rows that have to be individually cracked -- no easy feat. Our article on Using FieldShield to Comply with PCI DSS shows an example of credit card PAN column encryption with a format-preserving AES-256 function. This is difficult for thieves to discern, much less reverse.

Managing IRI Metadata in the Cloud
A metadata management hub allows the collection, storage, maintenance, and distribution of metadata through repositories. EGit (Git for Eclipse), allows IRI Workbench users, and their colleagues in the cloud, to share, secure, track, and assess the impact of changes to their metadata assets. Click here to explore our novel use of this free and familiar facility for managing your versions of CoSort SortCL scripts, .DDF files, FACT .ini files, SQL procedures, loader control files, batch scripts, and more!

New DB Protection Software Coming
Gartner predicts that through 2016, most organizations will fail to develop a consolidated data security policy across silos, "leading to potential noncompliance, security breaches and financial liabilities." To foster data-centric audit and protection (DCAP) across the enterprise, a new IRI Data Protector suite product, called IRI AuditHub, will: set DB activity and user limits; monitor SQL executions and notify on alerts; and, provide a hub for compliance auditing with searchable logs. AuditHub v1 will support Oracle and SQL Server. Future versions will support multiple databases and directly integrate with FieldShield to mask data in conjunction with DAM/DAP activities.
