Are You Celebrating Women's Equality Day?
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
The 19th Amendment to U.S. Constitution
Celebrate the day U.S. women won the right to vote: August 26, 1920. On that date, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was certified as law. In 1971, Congress passed legislation to designate August 26th,tannually as Women’s Equality Day. .” This year's theme, Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment will continue to be the theme for celebrations of Women's Equality Day throughout the country.
The importance of this celebration is to remind the country of the importance
of participating in our democracy. The Women's Suffrage Movement spanned over three generations and 72 years. It was a massive, peaceful civil rights movement that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York. It is an amazing story of triumph over countless challenges.
