SST Coaching Connection

Sir Alex Ferguson & Pepe Guardiola  (uefa.com)

As a soccer coach at any level one of the main challenges is how to motivate a player.  You see the potential in the player but their work ethic isn't there.  As a coach it is our job to learn how each player learns the game.

Motivating young players is a basic tool in coaching soccer. Use the following soccer coaching tips to help.

The way you communicate - with the right approach and by using positive language you'll get enthusiasm and positive action - from yourself and those you coach.

Various coaching methods enhance the motivation levels within soccer training sessions and during matches, including goal setting, rewarding positive outcomes and involving players in your training plans.

Allowing and encouraging players to take responsibility for their own behavior and performance outcomes has a significant impact.

The main coaching tip to take away is:  Get to know each of your players on your squad. Some players need a little extra attention, some need to be left alone. Each player is unique and responds in different ways. It is OUR JOB as coaches to understand each player.

Here is a video of top-flight coaches from around the world and their thoughts on coaching.

Insight from Sergio Flores

Summer is a great time to take your training to the next level!  As a player this is the time to improve your individual skills. How are you going to get better than the competition?  What are you doing to take your game to the next level?
Here are two videos to help you improve your dribbling.  Dedicate 30 minutes a day to touching a soccer ball.
  • Small touches between the cones
  • Use both feet
  • Speed and Agility with the Ball

1 touch passing

  • No need for a partner- Use a wall and 2 cones as a goal
  • Always on your toes
  • Lock your ankle, inside of the foot

Testimonials

My daughter Soleil is 10 years old. Soleil has been training with Coach Sergio for 6 months. Since she started personal training with Coach Sergio, her soccer skills have significantly improved. Not only is Sergio knowledgeable about the game of soccer, he has a way of communicating with children that allows them to thrive. Above all, Sergio is kind and has an enormous amount of patience. I highly recommend Sergio as a Personal Trainer.
