Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Releases Their Recommendations

PCRM's Sustainable Power Plate

Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issues dietary guidelines that influence all federal programs, including school lunches, food assistance for low-income families, grants that help low-income pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children deemed to be at nutritional risk, and nutrition education programs targeting limited-resource adults with young children and limited-resource youth.  The USDA is not only our nation's authority on what constitutes healthy eating, but also the entity responsible for encouraging, supporting, and expanding the need for our country's agricultural products, both in our country and around the world.  Not all agricultural products promote health when consumed, namely meat, fish, seafood, dairy, and eggs.  Do you ever wonder how objective they are able to remain with regard to our nutrition guidelines when a big part of their job is to support and expand animal agriculture?  Well you wouldn't be the first.

Club Veg

Do you feel like you're all alone trying to make a plant-based lifestyle work for you?  Would it be helpful for others to be there to hold you accountable and keep you on track each month?  Are you plant-curious but don't know how to try it out?  Are you steadfast in your plant-based lifestyle, but would enjoy meeting some like-minded people in your area?
Beginning in March and continuing the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8:30 pm, Caroline Graettinger of Garden Dish and I are teaming up to present Club Veg at the beautiful Avani Institute in Peters Township.
Every month, we will talk about an interesting aspect of this lifestyle that you can easily apply to your everyday life.  We will show our cooking demonstration video and then provide everyone with a sampling of the recipe from the video.  We'll then wrap up the evening with some social time so that you can get to know others in your area that have embraced a plant-based lifestyle, so that we can begin to build a close-knit, supportive, plant-based community.  We want to be a resource for you in your quest for better health and we want you to network with others in the area.  The cost to attend is $20 per person.
Seating is limited so reserve your seat for this Tuesday at the following link:

Back by Popular Demand!
The Secret Side of Food: How to Heal Yourself in the Kitchen
(Caution: This series may cause weight loss!)

KDKA-TV covered one of our workshops and it resulted in such a demand for this series that we are going to do it again beginning on March 11 and continuing on March 18, 25, and April 1 from 7 to 9 pm at Avani Institute in Peters Township.
Gianna Thomas, Julie Cerrone, and I will teach you what foods you should avoid and why; how your food choices can impact your ability to prevent, arrest, reverse, or more effectively battle chronic, degenerative disease; what GMOs are and whether or not you should be concerned about their presence in our food system; and how to apply what you've learned in your everyday life.

The cost of the series is $130 per person or $35 per person for each class.

For more information and to register, visit Avani Institute's web site or call 724-941-7400.

Pan Muffin
By Uma Purighalla, MD

In one of her recent cooking demonstration videos, Dr. Purighalla shows us that when eating plant-based, we are only limited by our imagination.

It's not uncommon for people to eat the same breakfast during the week, and hopefully it's old fashioned oats topped with mixed berries, ground flax seed, wheat germ, and walnuts.  However, at times, it can become a little boring.  Instead of reaching for that donut to change things up a bit, with a little advanced planning and an office kichenette, you can whip together the ingredients for a delicious, eggless, oil-less, muffin that cooks all by itself in a rice cooker while you're busy at work.

Check out how Dr. Purighalla makes a perfect one serving muffin using ingredients and a small rice cooker that she keeps in her office:

Silk Introduces
Cashew Milk
Adding to the incredible variety of non-dairy milks now available to us, Silk introduces cashew milk.  I have to admit, it is not my favorite.  I still prefer Silk's unsweetened, original almond milk, but give this a try.  It might become your fav.

22 Days Nutrition
Vegan Meal Delivery

Well apparently plant-based delivery services are popping up all over the place.  The latest that I've found is called 22 Days Nutrition.  22 Days Nutrition recently guided Beyonce and Jay-Z on a 22 Days Vegan Challenge.

Just like Pittsburgh's very own Chip and Kale, these companies are enabling people to eat healthy, plant-based meals that they otherwise would not have the time or inclination to cook.  If you think this would provide you with the convenience that you need to succeed, why not give these services a try?

Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes its Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen.  The Dirty Dozen are the twelve most pesticide-laden produce that they recommend we buy organic if at all possible.  The Clean Fifteen are the fifteen least pesticide-laden produce that we can buy conventionally grown if unable to purchase everything organic.  It is a great way to try to decrease you and your family's pesticide intake.
The EWG also introduced a phone app compatible with iPhones, Androids, and Windows cell phones that keeps this important information right at your fingertips.  Just click on the following link for the latest lists and phone app.:
