22-YEAR INCUMBENT REP. CAROLYN MALONEY (D-NY) AFRAID TO DEBATE CHALLENGER NICK DI IORIO

Rejects 2 Debate Invites, Misleads Press & Voters Claiming 'Forum' is a Debate (Forum Organizers Say No It Isn't)

NEW YORK, NY -- Nick Di iorio, challenger to long-term incumbent Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY-12), has accepted two invitations to debate, while she has refused to debate him.  Di iorio has requested a "no notes" rule, whereby he and Maloney would have no talking points or research notes in front of them, but only a blank sheet of paper and writing utensil for note taking.  Maloney has refused and will not debate her opponent even once before the Nov. 4th election.

Event organizers for the traditional 17th Precinct Community Council Candidates' Night Forum have now twice gone on the record with the media clarifying the Oct. 28 event is not a debate.  Two media outlets have confirmed that it is not a debate ("an officer at the 17th Precinct told a T&V reporter it's "not really a debate," bit.ly/1rttsss "Turns out even the sponsors don't call what Maloney agreed to a debate." nyp.st/1wnqA5z).  Despite this, Maloney continues to mislead voters by claiming that a forum - featuring local, state, and federal candidates each making brief remarks and taking a few minutes of Q&A - constitutes a "debate" as she continues to avoid a debate in her 12th quest for the congressional seat with an annual salary of $174,000 plus benefits.

Columbia University College Republican and Democrat clubs jointly invited both Di iorio and Maloney to a debate that would have also welcomed NYU and other colleges to attend.  Di orio enthusiastically accepted.  Maloney declined.  Queens' The National Herald newspaper also invited both candidates to a debate, and again, Di iorio accepted while Maloney was not interested.

"It is unacceptable and cowardly that Carolyn Maloney expects to sashay into another term in Congress, continue to introduce more Dead-on-Arrival bills than anyone else in Congress, exhibit embarrassing performances in important committee hearings yet not even show up to debate during this campaign," said Di iorio. "It's an election, not a coronation."

"Washington isn't just broken -- it's corrupt.  And Carolyn Maloney is part of the problem," said Di iorio, who spent six years in a seminary studying to be a priest.  "We need serious representation in Congress, and New York deserves to have someone there who is working hard for them who takes the job seriously, understands the issues, and can get results.  Carolyn Maloney is not that person."

Nick Di iorio, the Republican nominee, is the sole challenger running in New York's 12th Congressional District against longtime incumbent Carolyn Maloney.  Di iorio has also received support from members of the Independence Party, Libertarian Party, and Conservative Party.  The district includes the east side of Manhattan, Astoria, Long Island City, Greenpoint, & Williamsburg.  More at: www.nickfornewyork.com.
