On Waltzing The Dragon

According to Benjamin Franklin, "...in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." And high blood sugar, unfortunately!

Tax Season on the Horizon

If you have type 1 diabetes (T1D), or you have a dependent with T1D, you may want to look into whether the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) applies in your situation. If so, you may reduce your taxes owing for this year, and for up to 10 years previous! Get an overview and key points on the DTC in Waltzing the Dragon's Finance section.

The Certainties & Uncertainties of High Blood Sugar

High blood glucose may be a certainty when you live with the diabetes dragon, however, what's less certain is what caused a high on any given occasion, what it feels like for different individuals, and exactly how to return blood glucose to target. How do you calculate a correction dose of insulin? How much extra insulin should you give for high blood glucose with ketones? Does extra N/NPH help when your child's BG is consistently running high? For causes, symptoms, and treatment suggestions for high blood glucose, check out Highs and Treating Highs on WaltzingTheDragon.ca.

Pump Insulin Adjustment...
Continued

Last month we began our series on adjusting insulin using an insulin pump with an exploration of how infused insulin impacts blood glucose. This month we build on that concept with an Overview of Insulin Adjustment for Pumps. Find out: the key differences between pump therapy and injected-insulin programs with regards to insulin adjustment; when the "bare minimum" is enough; what exactly a Semi-Structured Record Review is, and when you should use it; what steps you should take for a more systematic and rigorous approach to insulin adjustment. Grab a seat... grab this opportunity to get a better return on your investment of D-time and D-energy!

Newly Diagnosed

The diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes may come as a shock and may lead to many questions, such as: Why is this happening to me? How will my life change?
Managing diabetes may seem overwhelming, especially at the time of diagnosis. The key is to learn as much as possible about the condition and to understand the different ways to keep glucose levels within the target range as much as possible. Troubleshooting High BG's

Image 4

When pumping, high BG (Hyperglycemia) must be taken seriously as insulin pumps deliver only short or rapid-acting insulin. Without any long-acting insulin “on board,” BG can rise quickly if the insulin flow is accidentally interrupted, and a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can develop. Read on for a description of DKA symptoms, as well as a list of questions to help troubleshoot high BG

What is Waltzing the Dragon?

WaltzingTheDragon.ca is a Canadian website for families dealing with type 1 diabetes, created by two parents of children with diabetes: Danielle, a former Registered Nurse, is a mother of three teens (one of her sons has had type 1 diabetes since 2001); Michelle holds a Masters degree in Psychology and is mom to two young children, including a school-aged son (who has had type 1 diabetes since 2008).

The articles on Waltzing the Dragon have been reviewed for content accuracy by the clinical staff at the Diabetes Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, ensuring the material is grounded in science and best practices. Then, as parents, we provide the practical, experiential layer, sharing “tips from the trenches” and what has worked well in our families. At WaltzingTheDragon.ca, we strive to make the dance a little easier by sharing with you the science of effective diabetes care, as well as the art that makes one truly successful. We hope that, as a result, all of us can focus less on the dragon and more on life.
