School is Just Around the Corner!

Was your child was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and now it’s time for her to go back to school? Or maybe your child was diagnosed months or years ago and is now about to start his school career. Or perhaps you and your child have been managing diabetes within the school system for some time, and you want to make sure you have covered all the bases. Whatever your individual situation, Waltzing the Dragon offers some things to consider to smooth out the return to school:

Roles & Responsibilities

If you’re wondering where your buck stops and where the school’s buck begins, check out our summary of a potential division of responsibility between home and school. It was derived from the excellent school resources produced by the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), then augmented by Tips from the Trenches from parents in the type 1 diabetes community.

How About a Dragon-Taming Guide?

… to take the fire out of diabetes… to lift the worry, to stop the nagging, to ease the strain diabetes puts on family relationships.

WTD is honoured to announce that Joe Solowiejczyk, RN, MSW (Diabetes Nurse Educator, Family Therapist, and Type 1 Diabetes Rock Star) is now available for family coaching sessions. Joe sees family dynamics as a key element in managing diabetes, and will guide your family in designing interventions that result in more effective coping and optimal glycemic control. Get more information to see if your family could benefit from a session with him (from any location, via Skype).

“Through one of his public presentations, Joe was instrumental in my own healing as a parent of a child with diabetes: his insights and humour helped me make the shift from grief to coping; I continue to use his practical strategies to deflate power struggles with my son, and to put life before diabetes. The fact that he knows what it’s like to wrestle with this dragon is a huge bonus.”  ~Michelle

What is Waltzing the Dragon?

WaltzingTheDragon.ca is a Canadian website for families dealing with type 1 diabetes, created by two parents of children with diabetes: Danielle, a former Registered Nurse, is a mother of three teens (one of her sons has had type 1 diabetes since 2002); Michelle holds a Masters degree in Psychology and is mom to two young children, including a 6-year-old son (who has had type 1 diabetes since 2008).

The articles on Waltzing the Dragon have been reviewed for content accuracy by the clinical staff at the Diabetes Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, ensuring the material is grounded in science and best practices. Then, as parents, we provide the practical, experiential layer, sharing “tips from the trenches”, sharing what has worked well in our families. At WaltzingTheDragon.ca, we strive to make the dance a little easier by sharing with you the science of effective diabetes care, as well as the art that makes one truly successful. We hope that, as a result, all of us can focus less on the dragon and more on life.
