Changing Routines, Changing BG Results

Back to School with the Diabetes Dragon

As we move through the last few weeks of summer, our thoughts may turn to back-to-school prep... how to write a diabetes care plan for our school-bound children with diabetes? How to implement a D-plan at school? Are there any helpful resources for those with type 1 diabetes at school? How can our family label snacks/lunches with carb counts? Check out our Away From Home section for these and other tips for a smooth transition back to school.

Why is Blood Glucose High? Low?

As a mom of a soon-to-be second-grader with type 1 diabetes, I find that the back-to-school change in routines (and my son's stress levels) predictably leads to BG highs. But there may also be other factors at play. If your family is experiencing too many highs or lows, because of school or any other reason, check out this comprehensive trouble-shooting guide to get things back on track.

Air Bubble Trouble

If warm summer weather has wreaked havoc on your child's insulin pump, and you're wrestling with air bubbles in the tubing (and the resulting highs from missed insulin), explore some possible solutions in our Level 3 Pumping article: Air Bubble Trouble. Eliminate the pesky little trouble-makers for good!

D-Stuff Storage

If summer fun has worn out your child's storage belt, you may want to check out promo code "DexG4" for 15% off your total order at Tallygear. com during the month of August.

How does your child cope with all that is unfair and frustrating about diabetes? Some of us tend to bottle things up, some tend to let those feelings out. As Michelle learned lately, expressing feelings is a double-edged sword. Read more in this month's blog post, I Hate Diabetes!

Recipe of the Month

Cheesy Vegetable Frittata

This happens to be low-carb and is a great option when your child wants a snack but their BG is sky high or when you're not present to give insulin at school. Can be served hot or cold.

1 cup of *favourite raw veggies (we use 1/2 cup red pepper (2 carbs) and 1/2 cup mushrooms (1 carb))
1/2 cup onion, chopped (5 carbs)
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
8 eggs (8 carbs)
1/4 cup half & half cream (2 carbs)
1/2 cup cheese
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8" square baking dish.

Place oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the onions to the pan plus any raw vegetables you want in your frittata. Cook until tender crisp. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Beat eggs, cream, salt, and ground pepper in a bowl. Stir in cheese and cooked vegetables and pour into prepared baking dish.

Bake until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes.

Cuts into 9 pieces at 2 carbs/piece. Serve hot or cold.

*Actual carb count may vary if you use even slightly different amounts of ingredients. We suggest you measure and calculate carbs independently for your individual product. What is Waltzing the Dragon?

WaltzingTheDragon.ca is a Canadian website for families dealing with type 1 diabetes, created by two parents of children with diabetes: Danielle, a former Registered Nurse, is a mother of three teens (one of her sons has had type 1 diabetes since 2002); Michelle holds a Masters degree in Psychology and is mom to two young children, including a 6-year-old son (who has had type 1 diabetes since 2008).

The articles on Waltzing the Dragon have been reviewed for content accuracy by the clinical staff at the Diabetes Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, ensuring the material is grounded in science and best practices. Then, as parents, we provide the practical, experiential layer, sharing “tips from the trenches”, sharing what has worked well in our families. At WaltzingTheDragon.ca, we strive to make the dance a little easier by sharing with you the science of effective diabetes care, as well as the art that makes one truly successful. We hope that, as a result, all of us can focus less on the dragon and more on life.
