Youth News

Summer YOUth group is meeting Wednesday and Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:30 P.M. High School youth are encouraged to meet at St. Mark.

High School youth have been busy sampling all the local dairy offerings.  So far, they have had homemade sundaes at church and made trips to Dairy Queen and Dairy Depot.  However, the time has come for the Ice Cream Tour to go on the road!  On Sunday June 30, the youth will be departing from St. Mark at 5:30 P.M. to make a trip up to Freepor'ts Union Dairy to check out the old fashioned ice cream parlor.  Yum!

Youth Room Remodel Update:
  • Painting and carpet will be getting done.
  • Donated furniture and game tables will be going in.
The youth room is in need of some help removing the old carpet. It needs to be pulled up and rolled to dispose of in the trash.  Please call or e-mail Melinda Alekna if you would be willing to work on this project. We will work with your schedule . . . whatever time works for you!  This would be most appreciated!
Please email melinda@stmarklc.com or call 815-871-0390.

Bible Study for College Students and Recent Graduates

The youth intern, Mary Buzzard, is putting together a five week Bible study for college students and recent college graduates set to start at the end of June.  This will be a great chance for community and a great excuse to get coffee every week.  Please email Mary at summerintern@stmarklc.com if you are interested.

Dear Friends,

I’m so happy to have this chance to visit with you through this issue of the MEMO’S.  I am St. Mark’s visitation pastor and I visit shut-ins, hospital patients and emergency situations, complimenting the ministry of Pastors Hagen and Stolberg.  We have approximately 25 shut-ins and I visit with each one every two months, more often if necessary.

I have been a pastor for 54 years.  My wife, Janet and I have been married for 54 years.  We have 3 children and 3 grandchildren.  Two of our children belong to Salem Lutheran with my wife and I, so I have “a view from the pew” many Sunday mornings.

I retired in 1998 after serving Salem Lutheran Church in Rockford for 25 years as their pastor.  I love people and I loved being a pastor and so I knew immediately that retirement was not for me.  One day I got a telephone call from the pastor of St. Mark that they needed some pastoral help.  That was the year 2000 and here I am 13 years later, so I guess everything has worked well over the years.

It’s been a busy 13 years bringing Holy Communion and prayer and encouragement to our senior members.  Many have died, but it seems a number of new ones need this special ministry and are added to the shut in list.

It’s always our hope to strengthen the relationship these folks have with St. Mark.  Sometimes health improves and they rejoin the congregation at Sunday morning worship.  That is always our goal.  Through friendly visits from the pastor we want our shut-ins to feel included, that they are important part of the congregation, and we care about them.

Every so often we find that we’ve missed someone along the way who is not able to come to worship because of illness or disability.  It’s not our intention to leave anyone out.  If you are unable to get to church on Sunday and would like a visit, please let me know.  My home phone is 815-226-7091.

It’s a pleasure to answer God’s call to pastoral ministry by being your visitation pastor.

Sincerely,

Pastor Don Lavelle
Visitation Pastor

VBS - What a Fabulous Week!
What a fabulous week we had at Kingdom Rock VBS: Where Kids Stand Strong for God! Seventy-one kids (32 visitors) and 42 volunteers praised God as we learned how God’s love, family and friends, prayer, trusting in God, and the Bible, help us to stand strong for God. The children presented an offering of $200 which will be used through ELCA Good Gifts to help drill a water well in Africa. The well will provide clean, safe water for as many as 500 families.

I am so grateful for the many ways that our members have helped to make Kingdom Rock a reality. From cutting out picture frames, creating the set, painting the animals, painting the murals, leading games or Chadder, preparing the snacks, creating Spotlight Drama, running the sound room, telling the Bible stories, baking the volunteer appreciation cookies, leading the songs, and shepherding the children during the morning, this has been a combined effort of over 40 people. I extend my deepest gratitude to Mary Buzzard, our Summer Youth Intern and to Gillian Collier, our Kingdom Rock Director, who have worked tirelessly and have been a joy to share together our vision of this past week.

I especially want to thank Gordy and Sandy Olson for providing scholarships for our students.
