A Talk with the Author

Welcome to November, everyone. Here in the US, we are well and truly into the celebration season with Halloween just gone, Thanksgiving this month and Christmas just 7 weeks away. Luckily I bought a treadmill so I shouldn't feel the damage of all this celebratory eating too much.

I celebrated my birthday in October and thank you all for your lovely messages. I took the day off work and my family surprised me with a birthday party. I don't think I have had a birthday since....well, since in a long time! It was a great day.

I am making great progress on Ha'ven's Story and Ha'ven and Emma's story is on track for a November 25 release. I'm really loving their story and I hope you will too. It's a very sensitve story. I have laughed, cried and fallen in love with both characters.

I am still looking to see what the full impact will be following the recent UK ban on Indie published books whilst the publishers investigated the types of books they were offering to their customers. My books have returned to the virtual shelves of Kobo and WH Smith however only two books have made it back onto B&N UK. I do not know when this will change. Amazon UK continues to carry all my books. As to what any of this will mean with the upcoming release of Ha'ven's Song, I don't know. There will be regular updates on my Facebook page which will alert you as to where my UK readers can buy Ha'ven's Song.

I'm also excited this month to profile M.K. Eidem, a wonderful new author of sci fi/fantasy romance. Her novels Grim and Cassandra's Challenge are doing really well and if you haven't read them yet, make some time to curl up with her books. They're a great read! Find out more about M.K. Eidem in the Interview Spotlight section.

Take care,
S. E. Smith

Blast from the Past

Choosing Riley: Sarafin Warriors Book 1
Amazon link

Riley St. Claire has always followed her own rules. When she discovers her current employer is not as law abiding as she thought, she has to leave town in a hurry or end up buried with the dead guy she discovered. What she doesn’t expect is to find herself being picked up by a passing trader from another world.

As the ruling King of Sarafin, Vox d’Rojah, was expected to produce a son who would be joined in marriage with the first born daughter of the King of Valdier. The problem was Vox had no intentions of having any sons, at least not in the near future. He was quite happy with the wide selection of females he had at his disposal. When he is captured by a ruthless Valdier royal and sold to a mining operation the last thing he expected to find with his bride mate.

Vox isn’t sure which would be easier: fighting another war with the Valdier or capturing and holding onto the human female who is unlike anything he has ever encountered before.
Now, Vox has to escape back to his world while fighting pirates, traders, and Riley!

The King of Sarafin has met his match with Ms. Riley St. Claire from Earth. Now, he just needs to figure out a way to let her know he has chosen her as his Queen and he has every intention of keeping her by his side forever.

I have started updating Shelfari. One thing I like about the site is it asks me what gave me the ideas for the characters. I love sharing just a few of reasons I have written the books and characters they way I have. One of those reflections is about Riley and Vox.

Interview Spotlight: M.K. Eidem

1. What genre do you write? I tend to write more romance/sci-fi/fantasy, heavy on the romance because really what is life without it, and I love paranormal. I love the fact that not only do you get to create the world, you get to make the rules, can you tell I love to break them, if only a little. I am a sci-fi nut, have been a Trekkie, since before they had a name for it. Love the Syfy channel and FX.

2. Why did you start writing romance/syfy/fantasy? I used to write growing up, little fantasies about me and my favorite rock group, it just kind of faded way during the college years, marriage, and kids, replaced by reading everything I could, when I found the time, and could get a book, oh the days before ereaders. One day I'm watching a syfy show and just can't let it end the way it did, the characters were too good, there was so much more that could happen, so I pulled out my laptop and just started writing lines and scenes, dialogue. Nothing great but it got it out of my head and on to ‘paper’ (so to speak) and that was it.

3. Where/When do you do the most of your writing? Since I have a 'real' eight to five job I write mostly nights and weekends. I don't have a 'firm' location, sometimes it's on the couch with the cooking channel on, in the winter I like sit in our dining room with a fire, than there is my 'official' room in the basement where I go to shut everyone out. It totally depends on my mood. When we travel, I always have a journal and pen with me so I can jot down thoughts and ideas. It's a great way to kill time waiting in the airport.

4. What series/book did you write that has the biggest following. Well, as a new author I have to say 'Grim', my second book. I couldn't believe the response it got. I released it and got a few sales, a nice review and thought, "Wow, that's nice, someone actually likes my book." End of story. Then the emails started coming in, asking about other characters, if there were going to be more books. I'll have to admit I was surprised. I'd planned on continuing the series because I needed to see how it all worked out but honestly didn't think it would matter to anyone else.

5. Do you have a favorite author? All of them? Okay that may not be totally true but I love to read and will give anyone a chance. The authors I seem to read over and over again are of course S.E. Smith, who couldn't love your books, then there's A.S Fenichel, Laurann Dohner, Mina Carter, Cathryn Cade, Michelle Pillow, J.A. Hornbuckle, Frances Stockton.

6. Describe your latest WIP Currently I'm putting the finishing touches on 'Victoria's Challenge' the sequel to my first book, ‘Cassandra’s Challenge’. Victoria has finally all grown up and is ready to go after the man she loves, Lucas. She returns to the Retribution and quickly learns that there's more to loving someone then just being in love. She and Lucas struggle to find their way between the Regulian attacks, Lucas being injured and the dreams she keeps having about her family lost on Earth. Together they both come to realize that when you love someone there is no sacrifice too great.

7. Do you write for a publisher. No. I tried that approach first, thinking I had to go the ‘traditional’ route. But was always refused, especially with Cassandra, they said it was just too long. Once I discovered I could self-publish I took a deep breath and here I am.

Read & Recommend
Sally from England won one of my competitions on FB and is our guest reviewer for November. Here is Sally's Read & Recommend:

Evangeline Anderson is high on the list of my favourite writers. I love the fact that she has an awesome imagination and charges tiny prices for her ebooks. My recommendation is for her new(ish) series 'Born to Darkness' which I admit has been languishing unread on my Kindle since they were published in March/April of this year. In my defence I will say that I currently have 25 pages of waiting to be read books!

Book 1 is Crimson Debt which is the story of Addison Godwin a girl who is a Non-Glam, or a human who can't be glamoured by a vampire. This being the case she becomes an Auditor, a person who polices the paranormals and if necessary executes those who cross the line.

Alec Corbin is a four star Master Vampire. As a vampire gains a century of (non) life they are tattooed with a small star beneath their eye. Because Addison's best friend Taylor has been changed against her will by the sadistic vampire Celeste who tortures her for fun, Addison reluctantly joins up with Alec to aid her. The rest is hot reading! The five stars I award it should be replaced by five fire crackers!

Book 2 is Scarlet Heat the story that gives us Taylor's perspective. To save her from the evil Celeste and because he is smitten with Addison, Alec forces Victor, an Alpha lone wolf with issues of his own, to marry her in return for having a large debt waived. Another hot tale!

I do so hope that there will soon be another book added to this series.

As you are fans of S E Smith, otherwise why are you reading this, you obviously like your Alphas hot and your heroines feisty so I think you will love this series.
