NEWNESS OF LIFE - This is the time of the year when we are thinking of new things. The beginnings of a new school year, new Sunday School classes, new football season, all sorts of new things. Yet it is the time of the year, autumn, when leaves are changing colors, many things are about to enter a state of dormancy for the winter, and there is a bit of an anticipation for the end.
As you follow the lectionary (the Bible readings for each Sunday morning) you will find them becoming more and more in anticipation for the end times. Even during Advent, which is the beginning of the New Church Year starting the Sunday following Thanksgiving, you will get the sense that we are anticipating the end. Judgment Day.
As Christians, we know that day is not something to be feared, but rather we live in joyous anticipation of that day, knowing that when it finally arrives, we will be brought into eternity with God.
Often Jeremiah the prophet is thought of as a bit depressing, foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem and the coming captivity of the Jewish people. Yet, as Jeremiah writes his book of Lamentations, he gives comfort to all of us saying, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23) Even in the anticipation of the end of times, commonly in laymen’s terms, death, there is something to look forward to. The blessings of the Lord, His mercies are new every morning.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17) CONGRATULATIONS! You are a new creation, in the midst of a new season, headed for the finish line! You can trust Jesus as He says, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:5)
