Chess in Tennessee Schools

Schools across the United States, Tennessee and abroad are seeing the outstanding benefits of chess.   Thousands of Tennessee's brightest students meet each week before or after school, some during their lunchtime, to enjoy, learn, and appreciate the immortal game.

Donelson Christian Academy started their Chess Club in 2011 with the help of The Nashville Chess Center.  Here's what some of the students had to say about how learning and playing chess over the past two years has helped them in real life: "I have learned that it (chess) can be difficult.  Just try your best, because life can be hard and confusing too." -Claire, age 9.  "I have learned life skills.  In real life, you can use calculations, goal-setting, and strategies." -Max, age 8.  "Chess helped me learn to set goals and to concentrate." -Rubric, age 9.

Congratulations to our 2013 TN Girl's Champion, Epiphany Peters.  She won with a perfect score at the All-Girls Championship held in Memphis last April.  At age 15, she is already rated over 2000.  She is pictured here at the NCC GM Simul Event with GM Alex Stripunsky in October 2013 where she was the only player out of 21 students able to obtain a draw at the event.  To view the game with annotations by Henry Robinson, click here.

Congratulations to the new TN State Champion, Kenneth Holroyd winning 4.5/5 points at the 2013 Tennessee Open in Cookeville this fall.  Our Scholastic Champions were Johnathon Christopher (HS), Michael Bowling (JH), Emilio Chen (EL), and Nathan Dolz (PR).  For full results from this event click here.
