Awards at Door County (WI) Festival
One of the biggest invitational plein air events of the year just ended in Door County, Wisconsin. The rules required that 40 percent of the competitors be new to the event, so some awards went to painters who had never before been a part of the festival. "I have lived in a variety of landscapes in my time, from mining towns with lunar landscapes to agricultural plains," says Brett Mon Garling. "I moved to this area in New South Wales, Australia, 15 years ago and gravitated to the Macquarie River during summer for some relief from the heat -- finding not just a great swimming spot, but great painting country. Every subject along this river is a challenge, from its ever-changing light to its abstracted shapes and forms. It's the challenges that have kept me painting there." [read more]

Winners at Telluride
A Colorado artist took the top prize at Telluride Plein Air, and she reports that the win is particularly sweet because Best in Show at Telluride is determined by a vote among the artists. [read more]

Parting Shot: One Can Never Be Too Careful
Greg Summers has people who care about him. They worried when seeing him painting roadside in Nebraska with nothing between him and passing cars but a breeze. So he was sent a reflective vest.
