| Awards at Door County (WI) Festival One of the biggest invitational plein air events of the year just ended in Door County, Wisconsin. The rules required that 40 percent of the competitors be new to the event, so some awards went to painters who had never before been a part of the festival. My Favorite Place to Paint: Brett Mon Garling "I have lived in a variety of landscapes in my time, from mining towns with lunar landscapes to agricultural plains," says Brett Mon Garling. "I moved to this area in New South Wales, Australia, 15 years ago and gravitated to the Macquarie River during summer for some relief from the heat -- finding not just a great swimming spot, but great painting country. Every subject along this river is a challenge, from its ever-changing light to its abstracted shapes and forms. It's the challenges that have kept me painting there." [read more] |
