Save Nubian Antiquities

spacer (1K)While the Antiquities Coalition and MEI are co-sponsoring a regional conference in Cairo on May 13-14 to reach an agreement on steps to combat antiquities looting, the Sudanese antiquities authorities are doing nothing to protect the Nubian artifacts and archaeological sites, once described by the famous British historian, Basil Davidson as the richest archaeological site in the world.

Smuggling and looting continues by local and international smugglers and under the watch of the Sudanese authorities who do not pay much attention to this dangerous traficking of the Nubian artifacts.

Damming of Nubian is one of the major threats to the Nubian artifacts and archaeological sites. The toll by the Aswan High Dam and Meroe Dam on Nubian artifacts was high and irreparable.
Now the cultural massacre has taken a serious dimention after the Sudanese government has allowed the gold seekers to flood the Nubian region in search of gold, plundering many historical sites and some companies introduced more sophisticated gold detectors which can locate and find historical golden artifacts.

In the absence of restrict measures from the government coupled with the absence of international organizations and supervision, Nubia is subjected to a wide scale cultural racketeering.

We call upon the Middle East Institute, the Antiquities Coalition and all participants in Cairo, Egypt conference to pay much attention to what is happening in Nubia, the back door of Egypt and the corridor to Africa where most of its artifacts are smuggled through Egypt to the outside world where many international museums host thousands of Nubian artifacts. The protection of the world heritage is an international obligation and not indevisible. The protection of Egyptian and other countries artifacts should be tackled equally.
